Delay in occupational therapy integration into the Cyprus General Healthcare System

The Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of the Disabled (KYSOAA) has expressed significant concern regarding recent delays in integrating occupational therapists into the General Healthcare System (GeSY). According to KYSOAA, the lack of coverage forces many individuals with disabilities to pay for essential services out-of-pocket, depriving them of necessary support for daily functioning, education, and professional integration.

In response to these concerns, the Pancyprian Association of Occupational Therapists (PSE) clarified on September 15, 2026, that the recent postponement of a meeting with the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) and the Ministry of Health was due to practical availability issues rather than a collapse of dialogue. The Association emphasized that the consultation process remains active, noting that they have already submitted a detailed proposal based on scientific and economic data. Both parties are currently exchanging positions to reach a viable framework.

The HIO and the Ministry of Health continue to evaluate the proposals, with the goal of creating a system that ensures meaningful access to therapy. While no specific date for the next meeting was announced, both the Association and patient groups like the Federation of Patients' Associations of Cyprus (OSAK) are pushing for an urgent resolution to ensure coverage for all citizens in need.
