Akrotiri residents protest plans for new British base antennas

Residents of Akrotiri, organized by the Coordinating Committee of Akrotiri Residents Struggle (SEAKA), have scheduled a protest for Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. on the main Akrotiri road, near the British Bases (BB) radio station. The demonstration follows long-standing opposition to plans by the British authorities to construct a new building and install 68 additional antennas within the community and a protected environmental area.

Local citizens and the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation have expressed significant concerns regarding potential negative impacts on public health from electromagnetic radiation, as well as threats to the biodiversity of the local wetland ecosystem. The Ecologists' movement is demanding full transparency, including the publication of technical data, environmental impact studies, and measurement methods for electromagnetic exposure. They have urged the Cypriot government to provide support to the local community by seeking accountability for these developments.

While the protest is the next immediate step in the ongoing dispute, the community continues to demand independent evaluations of the project. There is no official statement yet regarding a suspension of the construction plans, and the local committee remains firm in its refusal to accept the current proposals by the British Bases.
