Energy committee inspects progress at Vasilikos LNG terminal

The Cypriot Parliamentary Energy Committee, led by chairman Nikos Georgiou, conducted an on-site visit to the Vasilikos LNG terminal project on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The committee, which included representatives from the Ministry of Energy, DEFA, ETYFA, and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), demanded clear timelines, precise costs, and a firm operational date for the facility, citing significant construction delays and budget concerns.

During the visit, Georgiou emphasized the project's strategic importance for national energy security, lowering electricity costs, and enhancing economic competitiveness. Following the site inspection, the committee met with the EAC board to review its strategic planning. Georgiou warned that Cyprus is facing an "SOS" situation regarding electricity adequacy, urging all relevant stakeholders to synchronize their efforts immediately.

Currently, the process for selecting a new contractor for the project is underway. The committee remains focused on obtaining binding commitments regarding the construction schedule, trial operations, and the eventual commissioning of the terminal to mitigate the ongoing energy challenges facing the country.
