Parliamentary committee assesses energy security and status of Vasilikos terminal

On September 15, 2026, the Parliamentary Energy Committee of Cyprus conducted a site visit to the Vasilikos LNG terminal and the nearby Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power station. The committee, led by chairman Nikos Georgiou, sought detailed reports regarding the project's construction progress, exact costs, and a firm operational timeline. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Energy, DEFA, Etyfa, and the EAC to facilitate a coordinated assessment of national energy infrastructure.

Nikos Georgiou emphasized that Cyprus is currently facing an urgent signal regarding electricity adequacy, describing the situation as an "SOS." He stated that stabilizing electricity costs and strengthening the island's economic competitiveness depend on the successful completion of the Vasilikos facility and future decisions concerning the GSI project. The committee is pushing for synchronized efforts among all stakeholders to ensure national energy security, while ongoing monitoring of the site and power planning continues to be a top legislative priority.
