Debate over Disy's position on minimum pension threshold

As pension reform discussions continue in Cyprus, the Democratic Rally (DISY) faces public scrutiny regarding its commitment to a proposed minimum pension of €1,088. Critics point to a joint statement made approximately three months ago by DISY leader Annita Dimitriou and independent politician Fidias Panayiotou, in which both parties advocated for this specific threshold.

Despite the ongoing formal meetings regarding pension sustainability, concerns have been raised that DISY has failed to formally advance this figure in current negotiations. Observers note that the Minister of Labour previously rejected the €1,088 proposal, labeling it financially unworkable. Industry bodies, including the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEV), have similarly warned that such pledges may cultivate unrealistic expectations among the public.

The party is now under pressure to provide a clear explanation to the electorate regarding its current stance. Failure to reconcile the past promise with current policy positions is being interpreted by some critics as a validation of the government's previous dismissal of the proposal as unsustainable.
