European Parliament addresses immunity cases for Greek politicians

The European Parliament recently addressed the parliamentary immunity of two Greek politicians, Nikos Papandreou and Aphrodite Latinopoulou, following separate requests from Greek authorities. During a session in Strasbourg, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced that the request to waive the immunity of Nikos Papandreou has been referred to the Committee on Legal Affairs. According to the politician, the matter pertains to a labor dispute related to a recruitment process at his European Parliament office that occurred three years ago.

Separately, the European Parliament plenary voted to waive the immunity of Aphrodite Latinopoulou. This decision follows a request from the Athens Prosecutor's Office, transmitted via the Supreme Court, regarding allegations of forgery, use of falsified documents, and electoral fraud. These accusations involve the founding of her political party, 'Foni Logikis', specifically concerning the requirement that the party's founding declaration must be signed by at least 200 citizens. The alleged offenses are reported to have taken place between 2023 and June 2024. Legal proceedings are now expected to continue in Greek courts to determine the validity of these charges.
