Nairobi and Munich selected as hosts for 2029 and 2031 World Athletics Championships

World Athletics announced that Nairobi and Munich will host the World Athletics Championships in 2029 and 2031, respectively. The decision was reached by the federation's council during a meeting in Budapest on September 14 and 15, following the conclusion of the Ultimate Championships. London and Rome, which were also competing for hosting rights, were ultimately unsuccessful in their bids.

The selection of Nairobi marks a historic milestone as it becomes the first African city to host the event. The championships will take place at the renovated Kasarani Stadium. Kenya previously hosted the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021. For the 2031 edition, Munich was chosen, bringing the tournament back to Germany for the first time since the 2009 Berlin championships. The events will be held at Munich's Olympic Stadium.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised the Nairobi bid, emphasizing its historical significance and the country's deep-rooted connection to athletics. He had previously committed to ensuring an African host for a major championship before the end of his term in 2027. Preparations for the events are currently underway, with Kasarani Stadium also undergoing upgrades in anticipation of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
