Andreas Mavroyiannis considers 2028 presidential bid

Former negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis has signaled his intention to seek the presidency in the 2028 elections, citing strong polling momentum that places him at the top of voter preferences. During recent media appearances, he confirmed that he and his associates are likely to move forward with a candidacy, though he emphasized that this decision would be re-evaluated if that momentum fades by the summer of 2027.

Mavroyiannis recently held a meeting with AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou to discuss potential cooperation. While he acknowledged that AKEL’s support is essential for a viable and electable campaign, he maintained that he would consider running independently of the party if necessary. He noted that his 2023 performance, where he reached the runoff election with AKEL's backing, provides a foundational precedent for his viability.

Looking ahead, Mavroyiannis plans to maintain open channels with political forces while addressing specific policy disagreements with AKEL, such as the party’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. He remains critical of incumbent President Nikos Christodoulides, characterizing his handling of the Cyprus issue as ineffective and clumsy, positioning his potential campaign as an alternative to the current administration's approach.
