Andreas Mavroyiannis discusses potential 2028 presidential bid

Former negotiator and UN Law Committee chairman Andreas Mavroyiannis has addressed speculation regarding his potential candidacy for the 2028 Republic of Cyprus presidential elections. During recent media appearances, Mavroyiannis stated that he is evaluating a new bid based on a sense of duty and the likelihood of electoral success. While he previously suggested that a lack of support from the ALMA party would not be the sole deciding factor in his candidacy, he later clarified that the backing of AKEL is essential for his electoral viability, noting that he reached the second round of the 2023 elections with their support.

Mavroyiannis revealed that he recently held discussions with AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou to evaluate his fit for the party's candidacy criteria. Both parties agreed to hold further talks regarding international policy differences, specifically concerning the situation in Israel and Palestine. Mavroyiannis also cited internal party polling that shows him as a leading candidate, though he indicated he would reassess his position if his momentum stalls by summer 2027.
