Cyprus reports high incidence of prostate cancer in men

During a press conference held by Europa Uomo Cyprus on September 15, 2026, for the European Prostate Cancer Awareness Day, Health Minister Neofytos Charalampidis announced significant data regarding the prevalence of the disease. Between 2021 and 2023, the island recorded an average of 726 new cases of prostate cancer annually. The minister noted that this is currently the most common form of cancer among men in Cyprus. Furthermore, in 2024, prostate cancer was identified as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the country.

Minister Charalampidis emphasized that prostate cancer is still associated with significant stigma, fear, and reluctance among men to undergo regular medical screenings. He stated that events like the one organized by Europa Uomo are essential for fostering open dialogue, as the disease impacts not only patients but their families as well. The conference began with a commemorative video and a moment of silence for volunteers Popi Christoforou and Father Ioannis from Kyperounta, acknowledging their contribution to patient advocacy and public awareness efforts.
