Cyprus and China hold joint workshop on cultural heritage preservation

On September 15, 2026, Deputy Minister of Culture Klea Papaellina addressed a joint scientific archaeology workshop held at the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia. The event, organized by the National Centre for Archaeology (NACA) and the Cyprus Institute (CyI), highlighted the ongoing bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and China regarding the preservation and protection of cultural heritage.

During her address, Ms. Papaellina emphasized that the regular exchange of professionals and academics in archaeology and cultural heritage management fosters both technical expertise and mutual understanding. She noted that the Republic of Cyprus, through the Department of Antiquities, maintains a long-standing partnership with the People's Republic of China. A cornerstone of this relationship is a 2014 bilateral agreement aimed at preventing the theft, clandestine excavation, and illegal import or export of cultural assets, which remains active and legally binding to this day.
