ECB staff committee seeks clarity on Christine Lagarde's future

The staff committee of the European Central Bank (ECB) has officially requested clarification regarding the future of President Christine Lagarde, following an internal letter sent on September 11, 2026. The committee warned that persistent uncertainty surrounding potential leadership changes threatens to undermine institutional trust and complicate internal management, including succession planning and strategic priorities.

Speculation about Lagarde’s early departure before her term officially ends in October 2027 has intensified due to reports linking her to a leadership role at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Some sources suggest this timing could allow French President Emmanuel Macron to influence the selection of a successor before he leaves office next spring. Additionally, speculation was fueled by the announcement of her intention to publish an autobiography in early 2027.

While Lagarde stated last week that there is nothing to announce regarding her position, the Financial Times reports that Eurozone leaders are working to reach an agreement on ECB leadership renewal by the end of 2026. The World Economic Forum’s board is reportedly considering a vote on her appointment for either October or November.
