School operations disrupted in Cyprus due to 24-hour strike

On Thursday, September 17, 2026, educational institutions across Cyprus will face significant operational disruptions due to a 24-hour strike called by the OEKDY SEK, PASYEK PEO, and DEE KDOKO DEOK trade unions. The industrial action involves School Board staff and hourly-paid government personnel, including secretaries, cleaners, school bus drivers, and specialized support assistants.

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has announced that, due to the total participation of support staff, it will be impossible to provide the required supervision, care, and personalized assistance for students. Consequently, the Ministry has issued an urgent appeal to parents and guardians of children attending Special Schools, as well as those relying on school assistants in kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary education, to keep their children at home on the day of the strike to ensure their safety and welfare.
