Independent Anti-Corruption Authority rejects multiple complaints against Savvas Angelides

The Independent Anti-Corruption Authority in Cyprus has faced criticism for failing to publicly disclose the dismissal of multiple complaints against Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides. Reports indicate that out of nine total complaints lodged against him, six have been rejected and two were closed without a formal investigation, including cases involving a spy van and his financial disclosures from his time as a minister. One complaint regarding the "golden passports" program remains the only one currently under active scrutiny.

The lack of transparency regarding these outcomes has caused significant public concern. Specifically, the Authority declined to investigate a 2025 complaint regarding Mr. Angelides’ "Pothen Esches" (asset declaration), opting instead to transfer the matter to the Parliament, which lacks the mandate or resources to conduct such investigations. Critics argue that by keeping these decisions private, the Authority has failed to uphold its mandate for transparency, allowing public uncertainty to persist regarding the status of these high-profile allegations.

The sequence of events began in May 2023, when six initial complaints were filed against the Deputy Attorney General. While the existence of these complaints was widely known, the official decisions to drop them were kept from the public, leading to ongoing speculation and high-level debate about the integrity of the investigation process.
