Anastasia Anthousi withdraws legal challenge regarding parliamentary election results

On September 16, 2026, the Electoral Court of Cyprus formally closed the case regarding the May 24, 2026, parliamentary elections following a request by former DISY candidate Anastasia Anthousi to withdraw her legal challenge. The petition, filed in July, contested the results in the Nicosia district, specifically focusing on the vote counting at a polling station in Nikitari.

The dispute centered on five ballots that were initially attributed to the ELAM party but later reassigned to EDEK after an error was identified. Anthousi argued that this change, occurring after representatives had left the site, triggered a ripple effect altering seat distributions in four electoral districts and ultimately preventing her election. The Ministry of Interior maintained that the reclassification was a legitimate correction of an accounting error made during the verification process.

While the legal proceedings have concluded, effectively confirming the current composition of the Parliament, Anthousi stated that she remains unsatisfied with the explanations provided by the state. She emphasized that although she is dropping the court case to move forward, she continues to hold significant questions regarding the transparency of the correction procedure. No further legal action is expected.
