Doctors imprisoned following the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Two physicians, 58-year-old Ilias Theodoropoulos and 56-year-old Ioanna Gaka, have been remanded in custody at Korydallos Prison following the death of 54-year-old singer Giorgos Mazonakis. The incident occurred during a plasmapheresis procedure at the doctors' clinic in Kolonaki. Following an 18-hour deposition, the investigators and the prosecutor upgraded the charges from "fatal exposure" to "manslaughter with possible intent" by omission. The suspects were transferred to the prison on September 17, 2026, where they will be held in separate, isolated cells for security reasons.

Judicial authorities cited several aggravating factors for the detention, including the performance of invasive medical procedures in an unlicensed facility without appropriate equipment or prior patient screening. Additionally, evidence suggests significant delays in calling emergency services (EKAV) and a disregard for medical alarms during the procedure. The National Center for Emergency Care (EKAV) disputed the doctors' claims, stating that paramedics found the artist already in cardiac arrest and were critical of the initial resuscitation efforts performed by the doctors.

The defense team, led by Nikos Agapinos, intends to appeal the detention order, arguing that the defendants' procedural rights were violated. Meanwhile, Ilias Theodoropoulos has reportedly initiated a hunger strike in protest against the decision, while authorities continue to monitor the ongoing legal and custodial developments.
