Doctors remanded to Korydallos prison in Giorgos Mazonakis death case

Two physicians, 56-year-old Ioanna Gaka and 58-year-old Ilias Theodoropoulos, were remanded to Korydallos prison on September 17, 2026, following their marathon testimonies regarding the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis. They face charges of manslaughter by potential malice for their actions during a plasmapheresis procedure performed on September 9 at their Kolonaki clinic. Investigations have since intensified, with the Anti-Money Laundering Authority initiating a probe into the doctors' financial assets, while EKAB paramedics reported in their medical records that the doctors refused to provide necessary information during the emergency transport to Elpis Hospital.

While the accused maintain their innocence, with Theodoropoulos claiming the singer was never his patient and that his death was inevitable, they are currently held in separate, high-security wings of the prison. The court proceedings are ongoing, and the couple intends to appeal their detention, with the doctor already ending a brief hunger strike.
