Doctors remanded to prison over death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Two doctors, 58-year-old Ilias Theodoropoulos and 56-year-old Ioanna Gaka, were remanded to Korydallos Prison on September 17, 2026, following the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis. The 54-year-old artist died during a plasmapheresis procedure at the doctors' unlicensed clinic in Kolonaki. Judicial authorities upgraded the initial charges to manslaughter with eventual intent, committed by omission, following an 18-hour testimony period. Prosecutors cited severe negligence, including the failure to perform necessary pre-procedure examinations, use of non-compliant equipment, and a significant, unexplained delay in contacting the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB).

Emergency rescuers testified that the singer was already in cardiac arrest with no pulse when they arrived at the clinic. Evidence also suggested the doctors ignored alarms on the equipment during the procedure. In addition to the criminal trial, the Anti-Money Laundering Authority has launched an investigation into the doctors' finances to determine if money laundering occurred, with potential asset freezes pending. The defendants are being held in separate, secure cells in Korydallos Prison to ensure their safety. The Medical Association of Athens is also conducting separate disciplinary proceedings.
