Five suspects arrested for circulation of counterfeit banknotes in Famagusta

Cypriot police have arrested five individuals in connection with a case involving the possession and circulation of counterfeit banknotes that occurred on September 11, 2026, in the Famagusta district. The investigation began with the initial detention of two 20-year-old suspects on the day of the incident, for whom the Famagusta District Court later ordered continued detention until September 28, 2026, to face trial.

Following a public appeal issued by the authorities on September 16, 2026, which included the release of photographs to help locate three additional suspects, law enforcement successfully apprehended the men in Nicosia on September 17. The three newly detained suspects, two aged 21 and one aged 23, were identified following information received by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YDAP). With these latest arrests, a total of five people are currently in custody regarding the criminal case, as the judicial process for the initial group has already moved toward formal prosecution.
