Volkswagen unveils Mission Efficiency prototype with record-breaking performance

On September 16, 2026, Volkswagen revealed the Mission Efficiency, an electric vehicle prototype closely aligned with production models like the upcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross. Built upon the existing MEB+ platform, the car achieved significant milestones, including a drag coefficient of 0.158, which the manufacturer claims is a record for street-legal vehicles.

The vehicle demonstrated exceptional energy efficiency during testing. In a controlled environment, it recorded a consumption rate of 6.48 kWh/100 km at a constant speed of 68 km/h. During a real-world endurance test covering 1,278.36 kilometers from Wolfsburg to Vienna—passing through Poland and the Czech Republic—the car achieved an average consumption of 6.89 kWh/100 km, rising to 7.51 kWh/100 km when accounting for charging losses. The journey was completed with only one stop to charge the 54.9 kWh battery.

The achievement highlights Volkswagen's focus on maximizing current modular architecture capabilities rather than relying on experimental technologies. This demonstration serves to validate the engineering direction for the company’s future electric vehicle lineup, emphasizing real-world range and efficiency under various road conditions.
