Savvas Papasavvas elected president of the General Court of the European Union

On September 16, 2026, Savvas Papasavvas was elected by his colleagues as the new President of the General Court of the European Union. He will serve for the remainder of the current presidential term, covering the period from September 16, 2026, until August 31, 2028. This leadership change follows the premature termination of the mandate of his predecessor, Marc van der Woude.

Born in Nicosia in 1969, Papasavvas has an extensive legal background, having earned a law degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1991, a master's degree in public law from the Université de Paris II in 1992, and a doctorate from the Université d'Aix-Marseille III in 1995. He practiced law in Cyprus starting in 1993 and served as a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Cyprus between 2002 and 2004.

Papasavvas has been a member of the General Court since 2004. His election marks a transition in the court's leadership, ensuring the continued administration of the judicial body for the next two years until the end of the existing term.
