Nikos Tornaritis appointed as Presidential Special Envoy for Cyprus issue

On September 16, 2026, the Council of Ministers of Cyprus officially appointed Nikos Tornaritis as the President’s Special Political Envoy for the Cyprus issue regarding Asia and Africa. The appointment, described by the government as an unpaid position based on his 13 years of experience as head of the Cypriot delegation to the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, aims to promote national interests and international support for the reunification of Cyprus.

The decision has triggered significant political friction between the Presidential Palace and the Democratic Rally (DISY). DISY Vice President Giannis Karousos criticized the move as a clear alignment of Tornaritis with President Nikos Christodoulides, accusing the President of initiating an early campaign strategy to weaken DISY. Karousos stated that the party leadership will discuss potential disciplinary actions, including the possibility of expulsion, as internal regulations govern appointments to government posts.

Simultaneously, the Democratic Party (DIKO) expressed concern regarding the lack of prior consultation, as officials stated they were not informed of the selection process. While Tornaritis maintains that the Cyprus issue is a collective national effort, his shift towards the current administration has left the opposition party leadership expressing public dissatisfaction and calling for party members to choose between DISY collective organs and the administration of Nikos Christodoulides.
