Microplastics detected in urine of children in Cyprus
A new scientific study has identified the presence of microplastics in the urine of primary school children in Cyprus for the first time. The exploratory research was conducted by the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health (CII) at the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), in collaboration with researchers from the University of Catania in Italy. Results were published in the journal 'Particle and Fibre Toxicology'.
The study analyzed morning urine samples from 29 children, using advanced laboratory techniques to ensure no contamination. Microplastic particles smaller than ten micrometers were detected in all 29 samples, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the most frequently identified types. These materials are commonly found in food packaging, hygiene products, and consumer goods. While the study confirms internal exposure, researchers noted significant variations in the quantity of particles found among participants.
Professor Constantinos Makris of TEPAK stated that these preliminary findings should not cause public panic, as the detection of particles does not automatically equate to negative health impacts. However, he emphasized the need for further, larger-scale research to understand the pathways of exposure and potential long-term risks to children's health and development. Scientists suggest that exposure might be minimized through consumer awareness and continued scientific monitoring.
