Escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Houthi fighters in Yemen

Tensions in the Middle East have intensified this week as Saudi Arabia launched extensive airstrikes against Houthi fighters in Yemen, following a rapid Houthi advance along the Red Sea coast. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have seized key towns and strategic islands in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that their forces shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet and reported that the Saudi coalition conducted approximately 450 airstrikes this week. Saudi authorities have not confirmed these claims.

On Thursday, the conflict resulted in the first fatality in Saudi territory since the escalation began, as debris from an intercepted drone killed a resident in the city of Taif. Previously, Riyadh reported over 80 people wounded by ongoing drone attacks. Simultaneously, an Iranian-linked incident occurred near the Strait of Hormuz, where a Togo-flagged oil tanker caught fire after being struck. These military activities have severely disrupted maritime routes, causing significant concern regarding global oil supplies. In response to the heightened threat, the United States has restricted government travel within 20 miles of the Saudi-Yemen border. As civilians flee the coastal conflict zones, regional powers remain locked in a dangerous cycle of reciprocal strikes, with no immediate path to de-escalation reported by either side.
