Diplomatic efforts regarding the Cyprus issue and domestic political developments

In preparation for critical meetings in New York regarding the Cyprus issue, President Nikos Christodoulides held a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman in the UN-protected area of Nicosia. During the talks, President Christodoulides presented 19 new proposals covering Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), methodology, and the substance of the process, which the UN described as a "good" discussion. While Erhurman expressed cautious optimism, he confirmed that no trilateral or 5+1 meeting is currently on the schedule.

On the domestic front, former Democratic Rally (DISY) leader Averof Neophytou sought a briefing from President Christodoulides to demonstrate national unity. Neophytou reaffirmed his commitment to support the President should a strategic agreement on the Cyprus issue be reached. He indicated that he will make decisions regarding his political future, including a potential presidential candidacy, in December, depending on the progress made in the peace negotiations.

Looking ahead, officials are intensifying diplomatic efforts to engage international stakeholders, including the UN, to advance the process. President Christodoulides remains prepared to extend his stay in New York if the UN Secretary-General determines that further meetings could lead to a breakthrough, though success is viewed as dependent on political will and the stance of Ankara.
