Oldest man in Europe passes away in Italy at age 112

Vitantonio Lovallo, widely known as 'Giton', passed away on September 16, 2026, at the age of 112. A resident of Avigliano in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, he held the title of the oldest living man in Europe. His death was confirmed by the local mayor, Giuseppe Mecca, who paid tribute to him as a significant part of the region's history.

Born on March 25, 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War I, Lovallo lived a remarkable life. He was married in 1936, had four children, and outlived his wife, who passed away in 2015. During World War II, he was captured by Nazi forces and held in a prisoner-of-war camp from 1943 to 1945. Remarkably, he remained physically active well into his second century, tending to his own vineyard. According to data from the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), he held the 32nd position on the list of Europe's oldest people, trailing behind 31 women.

Following his passing, the title of the oldest man in Europe has transitioned to Joaquim Varela from Portugal, who is 111 years old. Ethel Caterham from the United Kingdom remains one of the oldest living individuals in Europe, aged 117.
