European Union proposes doubling fisheries budget to 4 billion euros

European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, announced that the proposed minimum allocation for the fisheries sector in the new European Union budget has been doubled from 2 billion to 4 billion euros. This adjustment, initiated under the Cypriot Presidency proposal, is currently being reviewed by the European Council and the European Parliament. The funding aims to support industry development and sustainability across member states, with negotiations ongoing to finalize the budgetary framework.

Commissioner Kadis also emphasized the broader context of the EU's current strategic challenges, noting the importance of autonomy in fuel, food, and raw materials. Reflecting on the State of the Union address by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Kadis highlighted the critical need to address geopolitical instability, the climate crisis, and the necessity of strengthening European economic competitiveness through the completion of the single market. The European Council and Parliament are now expected to deliberate on these figures to reach a final decision regarding the financial allocations for the upcoming period.
