Cyprus police conduct nationwide preventive security operations

Between September 17 and 19, 2026, the Cyprus Police conducted a series of intensive, nationwide preventive security operations. These patrols focused on key urban locations with the primary goal of deterring criminal activity, maintaining public order, and enhancing the public's sense of security. The operations involved checking hundreds of vehicles, individuals, and commercial premises across the island.

Throughout these three nights, police stopped a combined total of thousands of vehicles and performed numerous checks on premises. The results of the enforcement were significant: authorities arrested a total of twelve individuals for various offenses, including illegal stays in the Republic of Cyprus, outstanding fine warrants, and traffic-related crimes like driving under the influence. Traffic enforcement was a major component of the campaign, resulting in hundreds of citations for violations such as speeding. Specific results from the final night included 850 vehicle checks, 14 reports from premises inspections, and 395 traffic violations, 95 of which were for speeding. Additionally, in the first eight months of 2026, police recorded 1,226 total cases under their road policing strategy, addressing issues ranging from drug possession to wanted persons and stolen vehicles.

The police have indicated that these targeted preventive patrols are a routine and ongoing effort to suppress criminality. Investigations into the cited traffic violations continue.
