Trial of suspended Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos continues

The trial of the suspended mayor of Paphos, Phedon Phedonos, continued on September 17, 2026, before the Permanent Criminal Court of Paphos. The proceedings, which have been held behind closed doors since late July at the request of the prosecution, involve testimony from key witnesses. A primary prosecution witness completed their testimony on Thursday after several hours, prompting the defense to request time for preparation. The court granted the request and scheduled the next hearing for September 22, with additional dates set for September 29 and October 6.

Since the trial began in July, over ten witnesses—mostly police investigators and experts—have provided evidence. Recent sessions have focused on testimony from individuals within the complainant's professional circle. Phedonos faces five serious charges, including rape, two counts of indecent assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, and administering a substance to reduce a person's resistance. The accused has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Reports indicate that the prosecution's case, presented by Senior Counsel of the Republic Michaella Pasiardi, is currently about halfway through the planned evidentiary presentation.
