Fatal flooding strikes near Barcelona

On the morning of September 17, 2026, severe rainfall and flash flooding struck Spain's Mediterranean coast, resulting in the death of one man. The victim's body was recovered by the Catalan Fire Department in the village of Olivella, located approximately 40 kilometers west of Barcelona, after his vehicle was swept away by a torrent. Local authorities are also conducting a search operation for a woman reported missing in the same vicinity.

The Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, had previously issued warnings for extreme precipitation across eastern Spain, placing Barcelona under a brief red alert. The severe weather caused significant infrastructure disruptions, including closed metro stations, diverted bus routes, railway complications, and flight cancellations at El Prat Airport. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged citizens in affected regions to exercise extreme caution and minimize travel.
