Inmate escapes restraints and attacks officers at Ohio courthouse
On September 17, 2026, a chaotic incident occurred at an Ohio courthouse when an inmate named Timothy Rigal managed to remove his handcuffs while being escorted to prison. Rigal, who had just been sentenced for assault and robbery, initiated a physical altercation, striking the officer escorting him in the face and knocking him to the ground.
During his escape attempt, Rigal engaged with multiple security personnel. He managed to overpower a second officer and slipped past a third while descending a staircase. Despite the presence of two additional security guards at the base of the stairs, Rigal continued his flight until he was eventually intercepted at the building's entrance. Law enforcement officers deployed a taser to immobilize him, effectively ending the escape attempt.
Following the incident, Rigal was transferred to a correctional facility. He currently faces the prospect of additional criminal charges for his conduct during the escape attempt, which resulted in injuries to the responding officers. Reports indicate that at least two officers suffered facial injuries, including broken noses, during the struggle.
