DIKO begins internal process for 2028 presidential elections

The Democratic Party (DIKO) in Cyprus has officially launched its internal processes and provincial conferences to prepare for the 2028 presidential elections. Party president Nikolas Papadopoulos stated that the dialogue will continue through the end of 2026, with final decisions regarding the party's electoral strategy expected by the end of 2026 or early 2027.

During an appearance on the television program 'Protoselido', Papadopoulos indicated that all options remain open, including an independent candidacy, supporting current President Nikos Christodoulides, or collaborating with other political forces. While acknowledging that discussions with President Christodoulides are ongoing and that there are indications the President intends to seek re-election, Papadopoulos emphasized that DIKO's final decision will be a decisive factor in the election results.

Beyond electoral strategy, the party leader addressed current national issues, including pension reform and the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. Papadopoulos defended the GSI, attributing opposition to the energy project to the interests of local monopolies and oligopolies, while identifying Turkey as the primary obstacle to the project's successful implementation. The party’s internal consultation period is currently ongoing, serving as the primary mechanism for determining its political trajectory.
