Cyprus introduces new housing policy for family additions

On September 17, 2026, the Cypriot Ministry of Interior announced a new housing policy aimed at expanding living options for citizens. The program allows owners of existing properties to build an additional floor, extend their current residence, or construct a new housing unit within their existing plot for the purpose of accommodating family members.

Crucially, this policy permits these developments even in cases where the standard building coefficient has already been exhausted. By enabling families to utilize their own property for these extensions, the government intends to lower construction costs, reduce the financial burden on households, and make quality housing more accessible without the need for families to seek entirely new properties.

This initiative follows broader government efforts to address housing needs, which also recently included plans to provide 570 state-owned plots at 25% of their market value. The Ministry emphasizes that this measure is part of a multifaceted and ongoing strategy designed to maximize existing residential stock and provide sustainable housing solutions across the country.
