EU Parliament debates health workforce crisis strategy

On Thursday, the European Parliament in Strasbourg held a plenary discussion regarding a new EU strategy aimed at addressing the severe labor force crisis within the healthcare sector. The session focused on the long-term sustainability of health systems, employment stability, and the improvement of working conditions for medical professionals. The report, which serves as a foundation for future legislative action, is co-authored by Cypriot MEP Loukas Fourlas from the European People's Party and Italian MEP Ruggero Razza from the European Conservatives and Reformists group.

Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Oliver Varhelyi participated in the debate, highlighting the essential contributions of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. MEP Fourlas emphasized that the initiative is the result of extensive negotiations and seeks to support the personnel who sustained European health systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. This proposal represents the beginning of a broader initiative intended to unite member states in addressing systemic healthcare challenges and ensuring better support for the frontline workforce across Europe.
