Cyprus reports 14 cases of West Nile virus as respiratory infections remain low

As of September 17, 2026, health authorities in Cyprus have confirmed 14 cases of the West Nile virus. According to the Ministry of Health, nine of these cases are laboratory-confirmed, while five remain classified as probable. Of the total infections, 13 were acquired locally and one was imported. One patient, who suffered from significant underlying health conditions, has died due to complications from the virus.

In addition to the West Nile virus data, the Ministry provided an update on respiratory infection activity, which remains low at 42 cases per 1,000 visits. Hospitalization reports for the week of September 7–13 indicate five admissions for influenza and six for SARS-CoV-2, with no cases of RSV requiring hospitalization. During the previous week of August 31–September 6, there were two influenza hospitalizations and four for SARS-CoV-2, with no intensive care admissions reported during either period.

Public health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to manage the transmission of the virus. The data was compiled through the Sentinel Surveillance Network in Primary Health Care, utilizing reports from both public and private hospital facilities across the island.
