West Nile virus cases increase in Cyprus as health authorities monitor situation

As of September 17, 2026, health authorities in Cyprus have reported a total of 14 cases of the West Nile virus. According to the Ministry of Health, nine of these cases are confirmed, while five remain classified as probable. Of the total, 13 infections are autochthonous (locally acquired), and one is classified as imported. Health officials confirmed that one patient with significant underlying health conditions has died as a result of the infection.

In addition to the West Nile virus update, the Ministry provided data on respiratory illnesses monitored through the Sentinel surveillance network. Respiratory infection levels currently remain low, at 42 cases per 1,000 visits. Between September 7 and September 13, 2026, hospitals recorded five admissions due to influenza, six due to SARS-CoV-2, and zero due to RSV. Authorities continue to monitor the epidemiological situation across the island to track potential further developments in both West Nile virus transmission and general respiratory health.
