West Nile virus cases rise in Cyprus as public health concerns grow

As of September 17, 2026, Cyprus health authorities reported a total of 14 cases of West Nile virus infection. Of these, nine are confirmed and five are classified as probable, with 13 cases identified as locally acquired and one as imported. One patient with underlying health conditions has died from the virus. Additionally, a 70-year-old man from Nicosia is currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit following a sudden neurological decline attributed to the virus, sparking public complaints regarding delayed mosquito control measures in the region.

Despite the rise in infections, health officials state that general acute respiratory infection activity remains at low levels, with approximately 42 cases per 1,000 primary healthcare visits. Hospital admission data from the week of September 7–13, 2026, indicated five flu-related and six SARS-CoV-2-related hospitalizations, with no intensive care admissions. While the Ministry of Health has promised intensified spraying interventions to curb mosquito populations, local residents report continued exposure and a lack of immediate action in affected areas.
