Cyprus approves emergency financial aid for farmers amid regional instability

On September 16, 2026, the Cypriot Council of Ministers approved two emergency financial support plans for professional farmers and agricultural businesses. Proposed by Minister of Agriculture Christos Senekis, this initiative provides a total budget of 1,501,200 euros to mitigate the economic impact of geopolitical instability in the Middle East, specifically addressing the rising costs of fuel and fertilizer.

The funding, entirely covered by European Union resources under Executive Regulation (EU) 2026/1894, aims to ensure the continued viability of the primary sector. A key component of the package is an 800,000-euro subsidy for "colored" agricultural diesel purchased between April 1 and October 31, 2026. This specific subsidy is capped at 0.126 euros per liter, with a maximum individual beneficiary payout of 5,000 euros. These measures seek to stabilize production costs and prevent price surges for consumers caused by supply chain disruptions.
