President Christodoulides arrives in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly

President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides has arrived in New York to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, which commences its high-level week on September 21, 2026. The visit serves as a pivotal diplomatic effort to push for the resumption of negotiations regarding the Cyprus problem.

Throughout the week, the President will participate in numerous bilateral and multilateral meetings. Key engagements include a scheduled meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on September 24 and discussions with the Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. President Christodoulides intends to present 19 specific proposals covering methodology, the substance of the Cyprus issue, and confidence-building measures to foster a positive environment for renewed dialogue. He is also set to address the General Assembly plenary on September 23.

Additional diplomatic activities include a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II and participation in a summit regarding multilateralism hosted by European Council President Antonio Costa and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Government officials emphasize that the primary objective of these efforts is to work toward a reunified Cyprus, free from foreign guarantees and military occupation, despite acknowledging the significant challenges and current lack of substantial progress in recent months.
