President Christodoulides attends 81st UN General Assembly in New York

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides has arrived in New York to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Accompanied by Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, and negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, the President is scheduled to participate in high-level meetings between September 20 and 26, 2026. Key diplomatic engagements begin on Sunday, September 20, with a meeting involving diaspora representatives. On September 21, the President will hold talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II and attend a summit on multilateralism co-hosted by Antonio Costa and Mark Carney. Subsequent meetings include a session with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on September 24, following talks with Guterres' personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. Foreign Minister Kombos will concurrently hold bilateral and trilateral meetings, notably co-organizing a high-level summit for small European states with Andorra.

These efforts aim to revive formal negotiations for the Cyprus problem despite low expectations. The President remains prepared to extend his stay in New York if conditions allow for the convocation of a trilateral or broader conference, according to government reports.
