President Christodoulidis arrives in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly

President Nikos Christodoulidis has arrived in New York to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly high-level week. During his visit, the President aims to advance efforts to restart stalled negotiations on the Cyprus problem, despite low expectations and warnings from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding the significant work still required to facilitate a potential trilateral or expanded conference.

Christodoulidis is scheduled to present a package of 19 proposals to Guterres—encompassing methodology, substantive issues, and confidence-building measures—during a meeting on September 24. Prior to this, he will meet with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. His itinerary also includes meetings with King Abdullah II of Jordan on September 21, and participation in a summit on multilateralism and international law co-hosted by Antonio Costa and Mark Carney. He will formally address the UN General Assembly on September 23. Furthermore, the President is engaged in high-level business contacts, including a meeting with Chevron’s Javier la Rosa, and will address issues of regional stability.

While the government remains prepared to extend the President’s stay should conditions for formal talks emerge, the focus remains on diplomatic engagement. Concurrently, the administration has noted positive economic assessments, with Standard & Poor’s projecting a reduction in Cyprus's public debt to 31% of GDP by 2029.
