Extreme weather in 2026 devastates European crop production

The European primary sector is facing a significant crisis as extreme weather conditions throughout the summer of 2026 have severely impacted harvests. Reports from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) and industry bodies indicate that heatwaves have reduced grain production by approximately 9 million tons, leading to producer losses estimated at 2.1 billion euros. France has been hit hardest with a reduction of 4.1 million tons, while Hungary followed with 2.4 million tons in losses. The United Kingdom is also experiencing its worst harvest since 1984.

Simultaneously, potato production across Europe and the UK is projected to drop by roughly 3.5 million tons, costing farmers an estimated 800 million euros. Yields have declined by 21% in Belgium, 13% in France, and 10% in Germany. Jan Van Luchen of Bruwier Potatoes described the situation as a perfect storm caused by the convergence of reduced cultivation areas—driven by last year's surplus—and historically low yields exacerbated by drought and intense heat. This downturn is creating widespread supply chain concerns and increasing pressure on regional markets.
