Cyprus health ministry begins mapping high-risk medical procedures

The Cypriot Ministry of Health has commenced an initiative to map medical centres across the island that perform high-risk invasive procedures. This measure follows direct instructions issued earlier in the week by Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides. Ministry officials are currently conducting internal meetings to determine the exact methodology for this mapping process, including assigning responsibility for its execution, with results expected in the near future.

Under current legislation, the oversight of private hospitals is the responsibility of the health ministry’s Registrar of Private Hospitals, while the Cyprus Medical Association (CyMA) manages doctor licensing based on Medical Council documentation. In support of the ministry’s efforts, CyMA has begun notifying its members to actively report unlicensed practitioners and instances of poor medical practice. The association stated that it refers cases identified as requiring further investigation to the relevant state authorities and, if necessary, the police. The ministry remains in coordination with CyMA as they determine the next steps for this regulatory exercise.
