Cyprus to implement new hospital protocols for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities

Following intense public backlash regarding the hospitalization of individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities at the Athalassa psychiatric hospital, the Cyprus Ministry of Health has announced urgent temporary measures. During a meeting of the Parliamentary Health Committee on September 17, 2026, Dr. Niki Ierodiakonou Christofi confirmed that the government is rushing to establish immediate interim solutions to address significant gaps in acute inpatient care.

These measures include the preparation of a specialized, appropriately equipped space within the Accident and Emergency Department (TAEP) in Nicosia. To support this, staff training for doctors and nurses is scheduled to begin in October 2026. While these steps serve as an immediate bridge, officials confirmed that a broader, permanent strategy is being developed as part of the National Autism Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2028. This long-term framework aims to introduce specialized hospital units, intermediate facilities, and community-based services.

Advocacy groups, including the Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of the Disabled (KYS-OA), represented by Themis Anthopoulou, have expressed critical concern, demanding immediate action to rectify the ongoing lack of appropriate facilities for individuals exhibiting aggressive behavior. The Ministry continues to work on both short-term stabilization and long-term infrastructure to improve the quality of care for these vulnerable populations.
