Cyprus issues yellow weather alert for severe thunderstorms

Authorities in Cyprus have issued a yellow weather warning through the CY-Alert and 112 emergency systems due to the expected arrival of severe thunderstorms. The warning, provided by the Department of Meteorology, covers the period from 21:00 on Thursday, September 17, until 17:00 on Friday, September 18, 2026.

The adverse weather conditions are forecast to affect the western part of the island first before spreading to other regions. Meteorologists anticipate not only heavy rainfall but also strong winds reaching up to force 8 on the Beaufort scale, as well as potential hail.

In response to the alert, the Civil Defense Force has issued safety guidelines to minimize risks. Citizens are advised to ensure gutters and drains are clear, secure loose outdoor objects such as heaters or water tanks, and take preventative measures for basements in flood-prone areas. The Civil Defense emphasized the importance of these precautions to prevent property damage and ensure public safety as the country prepares for the approaching weather disturbance.
