Cyprus under yellow weather warning for storms and strong winds

The Cyprus Meteorological Service has issued a yellow weather warning, in effect from 21:00 on September 17 until 17:00 on September 18, 2026. The alert, prompted by a low-pressure system, warns of isolated strong thunderstorms, hail, and gale-force winds reaching speeds of up to 8-9 Beaufort. The phenomena initially affected the western part of the island, including Paphos and the Akamas region, before moving toward the mountainous areas and the eastern half of the island.

In response, authorities activated the CY-Alert system to notify the public, though officials noted that a non-audible alert was chosen to avoid unnecessary panic. The Civil Defense has issued guidelines for residents, urging them to clear storm drains, secure outdoor items, and avoid low-lying areas or flooded roads. Reported rainfall reached approximately 24-26 millimeters in stations like Kathikas and Larnaca. Conditions are expected to show significant improvement by late Friday afternoon as the weather system dissipates.
