Heavy storms hit Cyprus as yellow weather warning remains in effect

The weather system brought heavy rainfall, with intensities ranging between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour, accompanied by strong winds reaching 8 on the Beaufort scale and potential hail. The storms initially impacted the western coastal regions, such as Akamas and Polis Chrysochous, before moving eastward to affect Nicosia and the Larnaca province, where local streets were transformed into rivers.

Authorities faced criticism regarding the timing and necessity of a country-wide CY Alert message sent on Thursday evening. Civil Defense clarified that the notification was a preventative 'Public Safety Message' (level 4), which caused device vibration but did not trigger the loud emergency siren associated with level 5 alerts. The Fire Service responded to multiple incidents, including basement flooding and vehicle recoveries in Aradippou, while local water management crews worked to clear obstructed drainage systems.

As the atmospheric disturbance moves away, the weather is expected to gradually improve by Friday evening. Despite the ongoing cleanup efforts, meteorologists predict sporadic rain and isolated thunderstorms to continue in mountainous and inland areas through the weekend.
