Severe weather conditions cause flooding and damage across Cyprus

A series of intense weather events, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning, impacted various regions of Cyprus from the early hours of Friday, September 18, 2026. The Department of Meteorology had issued a yellow weather warning, effective from 9:00 PM Thursday until 5:00 PM Friday, citing anticipated rainfall intensity between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour. The instability was triggered by a combination of low atmospheric pressure and an isolated cold drop in the upper atmosphere.

The adverse weather caused significant infrastructure issues, particularly in Paphos and Larnaca. In Lara, Paphos, a lightning strike ignited a fire that destroyed a café-restaurant, while strong winds downed trees and damaged power lines in the Faros area. In Larnaca, especially the Aradippou, Agii Anargyri, and Livadia districts, heavy downpours transformed streets into rivers, forcing the Fire Service and local government crews to pump water from flooded basements and clear stormwater drains. A vehicle was also removed from a flooded roadway in Aradippou.

The event prompted the authorities to issue a CY-Alert notification to citizens. Civil Defense clarified that the alert, which emitted a vibration instead of a siren, was a preventative measure rather than an emergency order. Meteorologists reported that while some regions received significant precipitation, others saw little or no rain, leading to some public debate regarding the necessity of the alert.
