Cyprus under yellow weather alert for severe thunderstorms

The Cyprus Meteorological Service has issued a yellow weather warning, in effect from 9:00 PM on Thursday, September 17, until 5:00 PM on Friday, September 18, 2026. The alert, which was distributed to citizens via the CY Alert system, warns of isolated strong thunderstorms likely to impact various regions of the island, starting from the west and moving across the territory. Rainfall intensity is expected to range between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour, with local hail and wind gusts potentially reaching 8 Beaufort during storm conditions.

The adverse weather is attributed to low pressure affecting the area. Throughout the day, the weather remains mostly cloudy with periodic local rains and thunderstorms. Meteorologists noted that phenomena may become intense or prolonged, particularly in mountainous regions and the eastern half of the island. Wind speeds are generally projected between 4 and 6 Beaufort, though they will strengthen significantly during storms.

Authorities, including the Civil Defense, have advised the public to limit unnecessary travel in areas experiencing heavy rainfall and to take proactive measures to prevent potential property damage. While some sources report a significant improvement in weather conditions by late afternoon, residents are urged to remain cautious until the expiration of the official warning at 5:00 PM.
