Yellow weather warning issued for strong storms in Cyprus

The Cyprus Meteorological Service issued a yellow weather warning effective from 21:00 on Thursday, September 17, until 17:00 on Friday, September 18, 2026. The alert warned of isolated strong storms, initially affecting the western part of the island before spreading to other areas. Forecasts predicted rainfall intensity between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour, accompanied by hail and gusty winds reaching up to 8 or 9 Beaufort in storm areas. A CY Alert was sent to residents advising caution and the implementation of protective measures to minimize potential damage.

Following the passing of the low-pressure system, weather conditions began to improve by the evening of September 18. Some localized flooding was reported in Larnaca, requiring intervention from the Fire Department. Temperatures dropped slightly below seasonal averages, reaching approximately 31°C in inland areas. The weather forecast for the following days indicates generally clearer conditions, though localized cloud development and isolated showers or storms remain possible, primarily in mountainous regions and the interior, through the start of the next week.
